The overwhelming smell of potpourri made my eyes water and Aengus sneeze as floppy skin guy led us into a sitting room decked out like the 80’s version of a Victorian parlor and not the large receiving hall I’d been dragged to last time I’d “visited.”

The Unseelie were displaying a very worrisome habit of kidnapping.

Queen Saoirse lounged on a pink settee in a white peignoir hemmed with white feathers along the edges. Even her heeled slippers, tucked up beside her, had tiny feather poufs. Beneath a large pastel purple turban, her face was done up in her signature loud and vibrant makeup. She smiled as she watched us walk in, her smile screaming predator.

“Where is Nibbleink?” I demanded. Maybe it wasn’t the smartest play to anger the Unseelie queen, but my head hurt, I’d been kidnapped again, and I’d just had to let the guy I loved drink my blood. My day was shit already, and I wanted my Brownie.

Saoirse tittered. “I knew taking her would get your attention.”

“Because, what, kidnapping wasn’t flashy enough?” I snapped and Aengus’s grip on my elbow tightened. I forced myself to back down. Pain and fighting my magic earlier had put me on edge.

Saoirse leaned forward and narrowed her eyes. “A certain Brownie may have told me you still have my Green Knight?” The last word lifted in a question, but I refused to answer.

“Where. Is. Nibs?” I repeated.

She flitted her hand as if my anger was trivial. “The Brownie is with the others of her kind, and she’ll stay there until you’ve returned my knight, and I’m brought Excalibur.”

Aengus jolted. “What?”

Suddenly, I was back in the truck as it tumbled down the ravine. I touched my fingers to the goose egg lump. Excalibur had been in the truck. That’s what probably hit my head. Confused, I looked at the queen, “You didn’t find it?”

“I was told the sword was not there. Not in the vehicle nor the area around it.” Saoirse said. With a flourish she gained her feet. She gestured to a tall narrow side table with a sweating glass filled with what looked like lemonade and ice. “Drink that, you’ll feel better.”

There are only a couple of hard and fast rules when dealing with the fae. One is never thank them and the second is never eat or drink while in their company. “I feel fine,” I lied.

Saoirse rolled her eyes. “I can’t have you limping around when I need things to get done.” She put a hand on what might have been her heart. She was fae so who really knew where or if she actually had one. “I swear the drink will only heal you and nothing more.”

I glanced at Aengus, and he gave a subtle nod. I limped to the table and raised the glass to my lips. The cool liquid coated the inside of my mouth like a sugar glaze. I nearly gagged on the sweetness even as I gulped it down. In moments, the glass was empty.
